Many patients are unaware that they are grinding their teeth because it often happens while they sleep. They may wake with a headache, toothache or a sore jaw muscles. In addition to causing discomfort, grinding can wear away or fracture tooth enamel and may eventually loosen teeth. Although the causes of bruxism are not really known, several factors may be involved. Stressful situation, problems sleeping, an abnormal bite, and crooked or missing teeth may be responsible. Regular dental checkups are important to detect damage in the early stages. We can diagnose and treat your abnormal biting problem.

Does your jaw feel stiff or do you have difficulty opening your mouth wide? Do your jaw muscles feel tired in the morning? You may be grinding your teeth at night (a medical condition called bruxism) or you may be clenching your teeth, which can be just as harmful. Research data suggests that natural enamel wears nearly 0.3 mm in ten years. In patients with bruxism or clenching, the wear rate may be 8 - 10 times greater. Saving a bruxer's dentition from occlusal destruction requires dental treatment and/or a nightquard bite splint. In addition to relieving head, neck, jaw joint and shoulder pains, treating bruxism and clenching is cost effective compared to ignoring the condition and exposing teeth to continued grinding.Without treatment, crowns, bridges, implants and dentures are often needed to repair or replace worn and damaged teeth. Care and Maintenance

The purpose of your night guard is to prevent bone loss, tooth wear, and sensitivity caused by clenching and grinding. It is very important that you wear it every night. With proper care it should last many years.

Keeping your night guard moist prevents drying and cracking of the hard acrylic material. Brush it with toothpaste every morning and store it in your case with fresh water during the day. At least once a week use a denture cleaning tablet (Polident or Efferdent) during the daily soak to maintain freshness. While traveling, wrap your guard in a wet paper towel or moist sponge to avoid spillage and keep it moist.

Bring your night guard to your maintenance appointments and we will put it through the ultrasonic cleaner.
